• Job Description: Vice President of Research and Development

We are seeking a VP of Research and Development to lead development of multiple products from discovery to IND filing. This Mountain View-based role is part of our core team and is critical to our success; compensation is reflective of a series-A startup and is commensurate with skills & experience. The ideal candidate has 15+ years’ experience developing drugs across a wide range of indications such as oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and fibrosis. The successful candidate should be a well-respected member of the scientific community; associated with papers in leading publications and the development of successful drug products.

    We leverage our computational platform to identify promising drug candidates, validate and de-risk them through preclinical studies, and progress candidates to the clinic through industry and investor partnerships.     • Collaborate with twoXAR’s discovery science team in the selection of lead molecules and their advancement through chemical optimization and preclinical development studies.
    • Provide strategic oversight to the simultaneous advancement of dozens of drug discovery and preclinical development programs, both internal and with biopharma partners. 
    • Provide scientific leadership and oversight to the Preclinical, Chemistry, and Translational teams that conduct studies with CROs and biopharma partners.  
    • Manage scientific decision making by working with internal scientific leaders and external KOLs.
    • Manage the overall development for drug candidates including preclinical research and IND enabling studies. 
    • Partner with Discovery, Translational, and Clinical teams to ensure a smooth and efficient transition from preclinical development to IND. 
    • Oversee competitive intelligence, as well as scientific and clinical knowledge management to track advances in relevant therapeutic areas, by interacting with external experts, attending scientific meetings, and staying abreast of the literature. 
    • Oversee patent landscape to ensure unique IP creation, subsequent filing of patents.
    • Convey information and present updates for the company’s programs to key stakeholders.  
    • Create development plans, track, and reports on progress, manage budgets and timelines.
    • Participate in Business Development activities including with respect to out-licensing of twoXAR’s assets and in-licensing of external assets. 
    • Help to establish and maintain collaborations with partners in academia, government, and industry and as appropriate to accelerate approval of twoXAR’s drug development. 
    • Further twoXAR’s culture of scientific excellence, achievement, and compliance for the benefit of the company’s stakeholders.  
    • Build out development organization.  Think through team structure, roles and scaling the organization through hires.
    • Recruit and retain top scientific talent to build and lead a premier drug development team.


    • Minimum of a Ph.D. and/or an M.D. degree(s)
    • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in discovery and preclinical research, at least 10 years must have been spent in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
    • Previous work experience in small molecule and biologics drug development with a wide range of indications such as oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and fibrosis.
    • IND preparation and submission experience required.
    • Visibility and credibility within the scientific and medical community are essential.
    • Proven leadership, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively to scientific and non-scientific groups are required.
    • Experience working effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
    • Possesses a sense of urgency; identifies challenges and problems and takes the initiative to identify solutions.
    • Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
    • Experience in developing successful collaborations with academic and business partners.
    • Data-driven with superior analytical abilities to consider multiple options, establish priorities and apply resources effectively based on effective decision making.
    • Understands and demonstrates the skills and poise necessary to build and grow a successful biopharmaceutical company.
